It Takes A Village
Moms hear it all the time, “It takes a village”. And listen, that’s true. But it also sounds
like an obsolete fairy tale. I mean we don’t even use the word village. We have cities,
and towns, and neighborhoods, with thick walls and high fences.
The truth of motherhood today is that it can be a lonely and daunting endeavor.
In early days, (and in some simpler, wiser cultures today), a village grew up around you,
and you grew up in it. It was everywhere, it was natural, it was the air you breathed.
It was aunties, and neighbors, and elders, lifelong friends, and extended family. They
knew how to show up because tradition determined their role. It wasn’t scheduled or
planned, it just was, because it had always been.
In modern America moms are showered with sweet baby gifts, cards full of well wishes,
maybe even a meal train. All lovey and generous offerings.
…but a village cannot subsist on onesies and casserole.
We need a deeper, stronger village and we are building it at The Mother’s Garden.
