Raising Capable Adults: The PNWMoms Movement

Somewhere along the way, parenting became really complicated. We started believing that being a good parent meant preventing every disappointment, fixing every problem, keeping our kids constantly entertained, and making sure they never had to struggle. But our job was never to create the perfect childhood. Our job is to prepare our kids for adulthood. PNWMoms is a movement back toward that idea—raising kids with enough love to feel secure and enough responsibility, independence, and real-life experience to become capable humans.

That means letting them carry their own backpack. Giving them jobs because they're part of the family. Letting them be bored, solve problems, hear no, make mistakes, experience natural consequences, and try again. It means getting them outside, giving them room to explore, and resisting the urge to immediately rescue them when something gets hard. Not because we're less involved, but because we're parenting with the end in mind. Sometimes helping our kids means doing less for them so they can learn to do more for themselves.

PNWMoms isn't about following another perfect parenting method—and it isn't about living in the Pacific Northwest. It's about finding a way of parenting that feels grounded in common sense, connection, confidence, and trust. We can be supportive without removing every struggle. We can hold boundaries without feeling guilty. We can love our kids fiercely while still expecting them to become contributing members of their families, schools, communities, and eventually the world.
